Hyperventilatingly cool new bridge in France. Millau Bridge (formally known as le Viaduc de Millau), is the tallest vehicular bridge in the world. Opened in December 2004, it stretches 1.6miles/2.6km long and hovers 885ft/270m above the Tarn valley in southern France. The steel-and-concrete bridge rests on 7 pillars, with the tallest one reaching 1,122ft/375m. Its architect, Sir Norman Foster, has said driving across it should feel like “flying a car”. Built in 3 years, it provides an alternative route from northern Europe to southern France and Spain. 1. The bridge has been designed by the English architect, Lord Norman Foster.
2. It has been built by Eiffage, the same company responsible for building the Eiffel Tower.
3. Over 500 construction workers have contributed to its completion.
4. Those who travel the 1.5 mile span will drive 885 feet above land.
5. The initial goal wss to get rid of the Millau traffic bottleneck.
6. It aimed at tackling the Millau bottleneck, creating an alternative, fast route to the Cote d’Azur, and add tremendous man-made beauty to the countryside that many call a work of art.
7. The bridge, via the A75 motorway, enables Clermont-Ferrand to be reached directly from Beziers.
8. The motorway connects the Cote d’Azur directly with Paris. It connects Paris and Barcelona, Spain and passes through Languedoc.
9. Construction officially began on December 14, 2001. It was expected to take 39 months to complete.
10. The company set a deadline for itself to build the bridge in three years, and they are coming in ahead of schedule.
11. The bridge opened in Dec. 2004, cars travelling from Paris to Barcelona sail over the Tarn valley in southern France at a height of nearly 250 metres, cutting journey times on one of Europe’s busiest roads.
